Veltro!
June, 1944. Sergente Maggiore Luigi Gorrini 1st Gruppo, 1st Squadriglia ANR engages
P-47 Thunderbolts over the Italian mainland. A combat veteran since 1939,
Gorrini began his career flying the Fiat CR 42 scoring twice in that aircraft.
He also went on to fly the Macchi MC 202, the Fiat G.55 and here the Macchi
MC.205 Veltro. His war record shows a total of 19.5 aerial victories, most of
them in Serie 5 fighters. Unquestionably one of the most beautiful and powerful
Italian designs of the war, the Macchi Veltro was powered by the Fiat 1475 hp Fiat
RA.1050 RC 58 Tifone engine, and carried 2 Breda-Safat 12.7mm machine guns as well
as a pair of Mauser 151 20mm cannon.

HUNTING PARTY
Spring, 1944. The Fiat G 55 Centauro begins to defend the Italian skies against the
Allied bombing offensive. Designed around Germany's DB605A engine, the Centauro
was a beautiful airframe that was fast, manueverable and heavily armed with three
Mauser 151/20 cannon and a pair of Breda/Safat 12.7mm machine guns.
Shown above is Yellow 5 of Secondo Gruppo, Seconda Squadriglia in Luftwaffe-inspired camouflage.
Flying wing is another G 55 of 2 Gruppo Caccia in the overall dark green livery.
Both aircraft operated out of Casina Vaga.

DAI BANANA!
June 28, 1943. Sergente Maggiore (Sgt. Major) Ennio Tarantola shoots down a P-40E Kittyhawk
over the Isle of Sardinia for his eighth aerial victory. As a boy, Tarantola sold
bananas from a pushcart, forever earning him the nickname that later adorned the
cowling of his Macchi C.202 Folgore. "DAI BANANA!" translates to
"COME ON BANANA!" and served to remind his adversaries whom they were flying against.

THE ARCHER Plate 01
Summer 1943. A Regianne Re 2005 of the 362nd Squadriglia, 22nd Gruppo,completes a firing pass
on a B-17F of the 301st Bomb Group somewhere over the Italian countryside. Considered by many
to be the most beautiful of the three "Serie 5" fighters Italy produced around the Daimler-Benz
DB 605 engine, the "Sagittario, (Archer) was capable of holding its own ground in combat with
either the US Mustang or the English Spitfire, the Re 2005 was a sleek and graceful design
that excelled in the hands of a competent pilot, and although its handling was considered
to be exquisite, it still mounted a hefty weapons load. With a pair of Breda-Safat 12.7mm
machine guns in the upper cowling, one 20mm MG 151 cannon firing through the propellor hub,
and two more Mauser 151s in the wings, the Sagittario would have been a serious threat
to Allied fighters and bombers. However, because of production difficulties compounded by
aerial bombing of the Regianne factories, only 30 or so of these fine aircraft were completed
before Italy capitulated in September of 1943.

THE ARCHER - Plate 02

THE VETERAN
April 1944. Major Dominic (Don) S. Gentile, 336th Sqdn., Fourth Fighter Group, Eighth Air Force completes his final combat sortie. Serving with the famed Eagle Squadron since 1942, Gentile capped a long and distinguished career as a combat pilot with 23 air to air victories and 7 air to ground kills for 30 German aircraft destroyed. Due to the hazardous nature of attacking ground targets, particularly with aircraft powered by liquid-cooled engines, the Eighth's assessment board gave credit for such kills which made Gentile the 4th's leading ace at the time.
