Looking for Caproni Ca.310 cammo schemes

Post by warhawk » Thu Aug 27, 2020 2:03 am

Hello,

I would like to ask for Your help in finding a Ca.310 for one of my future projects.
Basic requirements are these:
  • Used operationally by Regia Aeronautica, preferably during WWII
  • Preferably camouflaged (other than single-color green)
  • Earlier model - without the two rectangular windows btw. the cockpit and the door
Basically, like the aircraft below, minus the rectangular windows:

Thanks in advance!

Very nice models, thanks for posting.
Apart from the rectangular windows, cammo schemes are indeed interesting.

...55° Squadriglia Libeccio build with Tauro decals rare documented example of reversed upper mainwing tri-fasci with two-tone mimetico & full rudder sail tricolor markings no less. Azur kits were good builds in 2016, BroPLan vacuform Ca.316 floatplane build this October is last of the Caproni "wind" series though wasn't given a nickname far as I know.

Are there any photos of the desert-camouflaged RA Ca 310? Having quite a lot of literature/reference, failed to find a single picture showing a complete RA Ca 310 with markings being visible...

Alamy proprietary stock photo of "Ca.311s" though appear to be Ca.310s in a desert-somewhere junkyard ala that of an auto "Pick 'n Pull":

"Caproni Ca 311" AV8 Collection 2 / Alamy Stock Photo

Fuselage hulks appear to be different Ca.310 versions; note desert mimetico mottle variations, different appearing fuselage fasci on two hulks well as one lacking any, presumed Brittish officer wearing Brodie "Tin" Hat. Speculatively these hulks could had been one of the abandoned North African Italian airfields during Operation Compass December 9, 1940 – February 9, 1941, not sure how long Ca.310s were in North Africa afther then.

...for the 55° Squadriglia Ca.310 build, can't remember which one right now, may had been a "pieced together".

Here's some more info from Stefano Lazzaro:

"In the attachments is an ex-Hungarian MM 21758, returned to Italy and recovered after damaging in North Africa, and a (faded) color picture of a pre-war RA example. Note the pattern. As for the paints, most sources agree for a Giallo Mimetico 3 (FS 33434) background, often sparse spots of reddish brown (Marrone Mimetico 2 - FS 30109 or Bruno Mimetico - FS 30215), these almost completely covered by large mottles of Verde Mimetico 3 (FS 34102). Recent researches state that undersides were most probably aluminium paint rather than grey (see Norwegian 310s attached). Front face of propeller blades should have been a light bluish grey like FS 36473 to 35526."

...Second fuselage hulk back from rear of Alamy photo probably had fasci marking midway upper fuselage ala this photo. Notice there isn't a unit code just the individual a/c, possibly a unit staff aircraft? The hulk also might had been a SRAeM depot or field repaint. Spraying aircraft undersides methinks requiring more time & effort, some period CR.42s & S.79s did have aluminum undersides C.200s possibly as well, Breda 65s could had though not see photos verifying this.

I think I've found a potential candidate for my model, that does not feature the rectangular windows:

This machine, no description provided:

Any advise/opinion on camouflage and/or vertical fin insignia is more than welcome!

Looking good, is there any other picture of that plane in particular, on Wings Palette or elsewhere? I'll look around a little and see if there's a picture showing wing insignia as well.

Unfortunately, I have found none...
But that pre-war fin tri-color leads me to speculate that the wing fasces were also of pre-war type (white fasces on black background).
