SM.79 Sparviero bombing Gernika in april of 1937

Post by Xan » Tue Apr 16, 2024 9:27 am

Hi everybody.

Image
acording this text , 3 Soria based S.79 took part in Guernica bombing:
the 28-1, the 28-4, and the 28-11.
I have no pictures of 26-1 neither 26-4, bur three pics odf the 28-11.
I would like to represent this plane..

those are the pictures:

picture 1:
Image

picture 2:
Image

picture 3:
Image

problem: if picture 1 and 2 represent the same plane, it seems that the third one is another plane with the same code (camo is diferent, and I don't think the plane was repainted)

Image

I imagine this scenario:

1) picture one:this is hau 28-11 bomed Guernica.
2) Later the word fratene was added in the bblack circle
2) The plane was shoot down, and another one took the 11 code (the picture 3 plane)

Does anyone have any informations about this ? planes lost list by the aviazione legionaria concerning the bombers

thank a lot...

Welcome to Stormo. S.79 MM.21380 28-11, 280a Sq., XXIX Gruppo Aut. Bombardamento Veloce flown by ten. Roberto Dagasso bombed the Renteria bridge south of Guernica on 26 April 1937 along with two other S.79s. It was later flown by ten. Col. Ranieri Cupini on several missions and on 15 July 1938 was lost when it crashed near Valdelinares killing the pilot ten. Giulio Giovine and all its crew except for one airman that managed to escape by parachute. The third photo of 28-11 is the replacement plane. There isn’t a list of planes on charge for the SCW that I'm aware of, but Marco Mattioli covers the S.79 in the SCW pretty well in Osprey Combat Aircraft 122.

If you're modeling the Guernica machine use Giallo Mimetico 3, Verde Mimetico 53192 and the undersides were likely left unpainted. Note the white wing tips, the white spinner and unpainted front prop blades and prop blade badge. There was a large white 'X' next to the wing tips painted on the top surfaces and the undersurfaces were painted in negative with black stripes. Also keep in mind the Italians were involved only in the bombing of the road and the bridge east of the town to prevent Republican forces from retreating + a fighter escort of Fiat CR.32s. The Italians had specific orders not to bomb or strafe civilians.

OK, this was my second step, the camouflage...
thanks a lot lot those informations.

So we are going with those colors:
Image

have you references, in gunze ootr tamiya , for Gialo mimetico 3, and verde mimetico 53192 ?

I look for similar camouflage profiles and I found those

the first one seems quite close to the picture so I choose it!

I try to extrapolate this sheme on the wings:

Do you find it credible ?

Another question. Are we sure those plane were painted in two tons camouflage and not three as it is proposed here?

Image

Of course with those colors:

FS Numbers are given in the Color Guide below (click the link Color Guide). Use the FS numbers to find the corresponding paint you need:

Stormo Color Gude

Also see the Gallery. Jean works almost exclusively with Gunze colors (Gunze colors are no longer available in North America), look through his work (e.g., in the Gallery do a page Search Ctrl+F and type "Jean"):

You'll find many articles highlighted. See Jean's CANT Z.1007bis for example and in the article search "Gunze" and note he used a mix of 50% RLM 79 and 50% white gunze + 20% future for GM3. I don't know anyone who has produced a list of Tamiya RA equivalent colors.

Jean's CANT Z.1007bis

Stormo Gallery

The camo scheme on 28-11 is the two tone CMPR C2, see the CMPR camouflage chips here:

CMPR Camouflage Chips

Profile 28-16 looks right.

Profile 28-16 looks right.
Sometimes it's difficult to see which is the base color.
Scheme C2 says green over yellow. Profile 28-16 could be interpreted as yellow over green (?)

Its a yellow base but if you intend to model such a scheme you could start with the a green base and apply a mask and then spray on thin shades of yellow. The problem with this approach is that its hard to paint over darker shades (green) and if you over do it you'll get paint running.

...masked topsides for CMPR Schemi B1 & B2 subjects lighest color always base. Got pretty good freehand airbrushing mottled ones. D2A & D3 Anelli especially, avoided even & narrow anelli painting, Aztek brush tips with enamels were too thick & uneven.
