WHOA! C'mon folks, WWI is fascinating! (Caproni Ca3 kits?)

Post by vikingcelt » Fri Apr 20, 2007 10:17 am

Hi ALL! :D

Today's my first day posting here, looks like STORMO! is a great site - I'm looking forward to great discussions and learning more and more!

Anyone know where to get kits in 1/72 scale of any of the famous Caproni Ca3 tri-motors, or the later versions, which flew over the Alps to bomb the Austro-Hungarians in WWI? :?

I've been on the other modeling sites, and have seen scratch-built models which were fantastic, but I haven't found any kits available modeling this subject. I know there were some kits, but are now OOP.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it very much. :D

Sincerely,
Ernest (aka "the vikingcelt")

It would appear that Italeri have a Ca.3 kit in development. I spotted it on Hannants website in their Future Releases section. It's 1/48th scale, which would mean a wingspan of just over 18" or 450mm! Not sure if the expensive AJP Maquette 1/48th scale kit is one of the OOP kits you refer to. I think it was built out of etch, white metal and tissue paper, so Italeri's kit will be quite welcome...

I do not know of any 1/72 kits.

afaik also Eduard is planning to release a Ca.3 kit in 1/48, which will show the new engineering standards set up with their latest releases. There was also another interesting "limited production" Ca.3, one recently appeared on ebay, but I have no ideas about the quality. Seeing this huge machine live is quite impressive, expecially considering the choice of materials and the fact that, despite all odds, it also flew fully armed!! :)

Cheers!

Alex

WHOA! Thanks for those links - impressive that a real Caproni Ca3/33 has survived up to today, from almost 100 years ago!!! :D

It is encouraging that both Italieri and the other company are coming out with CA 3's, if only in 1/48th scale - maybe this will raise the profile of the plane and make folks aware of it's importance enough to motivate the model companies to finally come out with a CA3 in 1/72 scale, which is also a very popular scale to model in - it can also be used in concert with 20mm - 1/72-76th scale miniatures wargaming, of which I am also an avid enthusiast!!! :D

Keep those posts coming friends!!! :D

If you like WWI aircraft, try this site.

You may also like this organization. Over the Front. Their magazine can be ordered from Squadron.

BTW, I am a History Major and WWI is one of my favorite time periods. I have only a few WWI model aircraft, mainly Eduard Albatros and Spads.

I love WWI aircraft also and with the new Fly Model kits of the Macchi M.5, maybe we can see a few posted on Stormo!

Also if you're a history major, check out some of the articles posted in the History section and submit an article. I'm always looking for new talent :)

As well as the Fly M.5 kit, don't forget the Spin Models 1/48 SVA5 & Caproni Ca.20 resin kits. Once you get past the very poor box art they are very nice kits. Karaya's 1/48 Ansaldo Balilla resin kit is also well worth a look.

The Caproni Ca.20 monoplane was built early 1914 so actually pre-dates WWI!
